From the Artist: Each year we have honored a different artist or type of art in our Art Cars. (Gaudi, Magritte, Monet, Klimt, Mexican Alebrije art, etc). Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's art and life inspired this car.
To begin, we covered the car with white vinyl making a surface that will accept the paint. If used for a previous year, we would just paint over those images with Kilz creating a blank canvas. We research the artist and look for images that would lend themselves to being on a moving vehicle and make a sketch of where those would be applied to the car. Then we change our mind as we go along. As we decide what images to use, the more difficult images go to Charles, who is the real artist, with Mary Anne picking images to suit her skill set. We use common outdoor latex house paint with some acrylic paint.
Our favorite parts about being an Art Car Artist include:
The process and creating delight.
We enjoy picking out an artist or art to celebrate and taking the car from it's blank canvas state to a moving art work out in our driveway during the spring.
Participating in the parade, both the line-up and actual parade, is an experience not to be missed. So much so that we have had up to 8 passengers in our Cabrio to allow friends and family to share in the adventure.
Meeting other artists and learning the story behind their car is another treat.
Driving the car as a daily driver extends the fun.
